Thanks for the response, Herb. I checked out Chuck's website, and his stuff about engine oil sludge, very informative. http://www.andrewsofprinceton.com/service/oil_sludge.pdf
One thing that he stated, and maybe I'm just hoping for the best, was that when he was running 10W-30 oil in his Aero, his oil pressure was reading low. When he switched to 40W oil (which I guess is now recommended), he gained about 3-4 psi. When I said in the first post that I was "topping off" with 5W-30 because the turbo was using/leaking so much, it has been about a quart a week since the last oil change in February, so it's pretty much got mostly 5W-30. I hope when I can stop the oil loss by fixing the turbo and switch back to Mobil 1 0W-40 synthetic, I may gain the same 3-4 psi as Chuck. If you look at Chuck's "Engine Health Certificate" on his website, it says 12 psi minimum at idle and 36 psi minimum at 2000 RPM. If I gain 3 psi with the 40 weight oil, then I'd be at 13 psi at idle and 31 psi at 2000 RPM. Still below at 2000 RPM, but somewhat close. Maybe I'm just fooling myself? The other thing, is that the oil pressure sender for the idiot light is less than a week old, maybe it is tripping "high"? With the old sender I never got a light when the engine was running (changed it because it was leaking).
After getting the turbo overhauled, I plan on installing a T adapter so I can keep the idiot light and mount the mechanical oil pressure gauge either on the instrument panel or in the engine compartment somewhere so I can keep an eye on the pressure. How hard is it to drop the oil pan and check for sludge? Is pulling the valve cover for a look and doing the wire scrape test through the drain plug almost as good?
Again, thanks for any input, this is a great website, I hope to someday contribute any experiences I can share.
Dave
