have seen several samples which showed that there was a coolant leak into the oil. One fellow had the headgasket on his Toyota replaced under extended warranty about a month before it was due to run out. He had no indication that there was a problem before getting analysis results.
Had a fellow with a new boat take a sample before putting it away in the fall. Sample showed water in oil. Dealer said it was only condensation. He sent copies to boat builder and engine manufacturer. Within two weeks, the dealer called to make an appointment to pick up the boat. Was a miscast head, fixed under warranty and all parties happy.
Fellow with piece of lawn equipment does routine analysis on about 150 pieces of equipment. A loader with low hours showed abnormal metal wear, indicating a bad bearing. No unusual noises, nothing noticeably wrong. He took it to his dealer. Dealer called manufacturer, and then faxed copy of report. Within 10 minutes, factory authorized teardown and repair. Had individual not taken oil sample, it is likely there would not have been an obvious problem until after warranty ran out. Savings: about $1800. Paid for a lot of samples.
