I you feel that doing a head gasket job after an overheating session or a long towtruck ride is less expensive, you can keep driving the car.
I would strongly suggest to have at least the coolant thermostat and temp sending unit replaced since both of them can create the same symptoms.
Dealer pricing is always higher but if you don't have an independant shop nearby, it might still be a good deal.
You don't want just anyone to do it since they might break fragile vacuum pipes in the vicinity.
A lot of owners have done it themself but we are all very different in our skills and tools on hand so that might not be an option.
It would be about $200.00 to replace those two items at my shop.
It could also be a cooling fan issue where the electric fan motor is not kicking in at times.
