Shell = (formerly) High sulfur content Posted by CrNiFe [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: Where do you buy your gas?, Ramiro, Fri, 6 Apr 2007 08:19:16 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Shell, at least in eastern Canada, gets its petroleum stock from Venezuela and the Caribbean, and it is well known to have high sulfur content. They may have cleaned it up in response to stricter legislation across North America, but the refineries resisted tooth and nail until force to do so.
Don't panic about the CAT just yet. Les is right - change the source of your gas first - sulfur dioxide can be caused if the combustion temperatures of your engine are not high enough too. Put some high-test in it, and the Trionic controls should adjust nicely.
I used to run an old 83 Buick Park Avenue, and every time I filled it with Shell, I got the rotten egg smell. When I burned Sunoco, no smell at all.
Unless the CO CO2 and NOx are off the scale, and you could determine this by getting the exhaust tested, don't touch anything.
The alternative is that the cat was destroyed by the famous DIC failure, which kills the ignition but floods the exhaust system with gasoline, and that destroys the cat converter. Search on the board for that problem.
Good Luck,
CrNiFe Toronto
