'm primarily a city driver and never really saw any big gain in mileage with 93-octane. So I've been using 89-octane since last fall. I finally got around doing some comparison with an extended highway driving last week. The trip was ~550miles (Boston-Toronto) each way in just about identical weather condition. Average speed was 75MPH in MA on I-90, 65MPH on I-90 and 55MPH on US-12 in NY, 80MPH on 401 in ON. (SID averaged it out to 61MPH.) I got 35MPG using 93-octane on the way to Toronto. I used 89-octane on the way back and got 30MPG. (Surprisingly, the SID MPG is very accurate for highway driving as it is ~2MPG optimistic for city driving.) For a 15-gallon fill, I paid $3 more for 93-octane. But I got almost 75 more miles, which is an extra 2.5 gallons of 89-octane.
While I somewhat expected to gain a few more miles with 93-octane, I certainly didn't anticipate this much improvement. Do people actually get 35MPG from their 9-5s? May be I just messed up the numbers somewhere ..
