Probably need more samples before reaching any conclusions. Then there is the ethanol thing mentioned below which makes apples to apples harder. This weekend we drove to see family and back. On the way up (93 octane both ways) managed only ~ 25.8 or something. On the way back was at 30.9 pulling into home. Similar driving and speeds both ways although there was more wind on the way up (blowing from side).
The first tank was Mobil and said up to 10% ethanol. The second tank (filled about 1/4 mark) was Shell and I don't recall an ethanol statement on the pump but it could well have had ethanol. Wind might have made the difference since driving was pretty much identical but could be many things.
