I was sold on ABS when I was driving my 96 Saturn SL1 home a few years ago on tightly packed snow with all-season tires (before I knew better) and a large late 80's american station wagon pulled out (though he had a stop sign). Frankly, I was probably driving too fast for conditions. Anyway, I slammed the brakes and realized I was just not going to stop quickly enough, nor was he going to be able to get out of my way.
The weird thing about accidents like this is that you have sooooo long before they actually happen that you see the whole thing develop and then wait for it to happen. It's so different from the speed with which most accident happen.
So, back to the story, I slammed on the brakes and was not going to make it. The ABS allowed me to stay on the brake and choose between the large hunk of steel or the snowbank. You know which I chose... The end result was that there were no injuries and only a few hundred dollars of damage to my car (new air dam and a couple other small pieces). My car came to a stop only a couple inches from a light pole. In short, I could have turned without ABS but probably would have hit the lightpole a lot harder and almost certainly set off the airbags. I could have pumped the brake and hit the station wagon pretty damn hard. That would have been a lot more expensive. The ABS allowed me to brake and turn. Whew. That was a lucky one and taught me a pretty damn important lesson about winter driving...
