Sludge. If you check the articles at site sponsor andrewsofprinceton.com they have done a lot of analysis. A bunch of minor changes from the 9k engine add up to more sludgeability on the 9-5. PCV, oil pump, low tension piston rings, extended oil change intervals etc etc etc. Not just a Saab problem.
Repair costs. Saab only sells assemblies, not individual parts. So when the $15 piece in the heater box fails the dealer wants to replace the whole box. When the $250 Bosch ABS computer fails they want to replace the whole ABS hydraulic system. When the $100 fuel pump dies, they want to replace the whole assembly with the fuel pump sender etc.... not a problem for the DIYer or indy tech with this site as a resource.
Fuel pump life. Seems some last nearly forever, but I see on here people reporting failures starting at 80k. Mine died at 80k despite always keeping the tank filled. It's EXACTLY the same pump as the 9k (in fact, I bought mine from a web site that listed it for a 9k). It's a pretty easy DIY, the lines just unplug from the top of the pump assembly and there is an access hatch under the rear seat.
