First - nice job Stephen.
Fact - we don't have enough land to grow enough corn to run this country on ethanol. The ability to grow and refine it is not advanced enough to make it economical - yet. It will take economic demand, market forces and government subsidies to get there. (hopefully few would argue that the United States has the both money and brain power to pull this off... If that's true, then all we need is motivation).
Fact - we can't stay dependent on foreign oil and be safe as a country. I'm pretty sure that no one would argue this. And Stephen's connecting of the cost of war in the middle east to the cost of securing our oil-based-economy was excellent.
Fact - Ethanol can run our cars...the ones that are on the road now. With only slight modifications - Ethanol can run almost all of them. Biodiesel cannot. Neither can hydrogen or a battery. An ECU upgrade for an existing gasoline engine is about $500. If the EPA would make them legal, I'm guessing economy of scale would drop the price by 50% or more.
Fact - there are no better ideas currently in existence, that would create a fuel that will power our cars...the ones that are on the road now. So we have to go with what we've got.
Fact - finding a way to power the cars currently on the road will have a sinificantly more marked effect on our security as a country than creating a new technology. Saying 'biodiesel', when we operate less than 3% of our cars with diesel engines is...well...limited in it's effectiveness. (It's great stuff. Awesome technology. Renewable. And everyone buying a brand new car should consider one.)
Naysayers...this means we have two choices for running the gasoline engines currently on the road. 1) Ethanol. -or- 2) Your idea...which is...??
