because I was going to tell you it wasn't a good idea to put a battery blanket made out of reflective tape on the outside... but I didn't get time to post it.
You are spot on about the temperature dependence though, and the life is definitely affected by the service temperature.
Anybody remember before alkalines, when you put the carbon-zinc batteries on the stove-top to reactivate them a bit after they died? Used to work once or twice - my dad used to be an instrument and electrical airforce tech, and he taught us that trick.
Don't try with alkaline batteries though! Of course, I can imagine someone reading this will try to put a 9-volt alkaline battery in their pants pocket just to see if it will really heat up. Make a nice hand warmer in your mitts.
