I've schleped an 18 ft Oldtown OTCA (100 lb Cedar/canvas) canoe thousands of miles on Saab's, always upside down. Minimal effect on milage in that position, and you won't have to worry about filling the boat in a thunderstorm deluge.

But, I would never consider traveling without a bow line. Ideally, a dual line from each front corner of the car. Apply chafing gear to the lines where they bear on the painted surfaces, foam pipe insulation works great.
