After using an oscilloscope and current probe to check the health of my fuel pump (135kmiles), I noticed that the pump RPM was varying significantly (see yesterday's post). I decided to change out the pump this morning using some great input from the site (special thanks to 5280Saab and MIRoger).
Other than removing the ring clamp (s.o.b. is on there tight!) and forgetting to remove the intake cap (caught that before re-insertion), the DIY for a fuel pump r&r is really not that bad.
Here's the follow-up news: the o'scope/current probe now shows a very consistent pump RPM under all tested conditions (idle, normal driving, heavy accel, heavy braking). No signs of hesitation or engine 'stumbling'. I also disassembled the pump for a look-see. Noticed that the Gerotor-style pump had one point per driven gear rotation that the pump had difficulty getting through. I know that this style of fluid pump requires tight tollerances, but this was beyond that. Possibly some grit in the tank compromised it.
Either way, the new pump is in. The car is happier. I'll post another follow-up after a few tanks of fuel.
