It does seem that this is a unique 9-5 problem. I have a 2001 9-5 Aero, and went through this whole business a year ago. It boiled down to a new DIC (replaced under the recall, anyhow) and the dealer also installed a new CPS (under CPO warranty.) Only switching to Sunoco 93 really "fixed" the problem, though. Never came back.

The other day we had a really odd stretch of weather. It was well into the 80's during the day and the next evening it went down to maybe 38 or so. The next morning, outside temp about 50, car having sat out in the driveway all night, bingo: 1st attempt, turn over, no start; second, immediate start, stumble badly, dies; third, immedate start, back to normal.

Personally, I think it has something to do with the computer and the air/fuel mix as temperature changes. It's just a guess, but I think that once the on-board computer "learns" what these variables are set to (more or less), it adjusts and eveyhting's fine.

Oddly enough, our other 9-5 (2000 wagon) NEVER does this, 90 octane Mobil.
