there's a lot of pieces that could fail without warning

on any car. We have TB, DIC, Turbo, serp belt/pulleys, V6 timing belt (REALLY don't want to lose one of those on the road), fuel pump, etc etc. Other than the turbo (most cars don't have it), any car could suffer the same failures anywhere. All you can do is reduce the risks through maintenance.
Fuel pump died (no warning) in a parking lot in my Nissan pickup. At least it was in town, but it needed a tow to the dealer for repair (for some reason, I didn't do much of my own work on that vehicle - it seemed way harder to work on than my 9-5).
Block heater in my 9000 Aero blew out (no warning), draining all the coolant instantly. Towed home for repair.
I remember as a kid being out in our '62 homebuilt motorhome (Chev 6-cyl) - the timing gear disintegrated a few hundred miles from home, leaving us 50 miles from the nearest tiny farm town. A long tow and a couple days in a "picturesque" hotel and we were back on the road. No way to predict that.
