Metal shavings in oil pan

I feel snakebit.
A few weeks ago I bought a 1999 Saab 9-5 wagon with 70,000 miles on it. I had read about the sludge issue on this forum, so before I bought it I had a Saab mechanic pull the valve cover to check for it. He said there was a bit, but not too bad. I bought the car and installed the PCV kit hoping that would be the last I heard of sludge.
A few days ago, the engine warning light and oil lamp came on, so I took it back in so they could drop the oil pan to clean the screen (which they thought was the extent of the problem). Well, once they got it off, they found metal shavings in the pan as well as some "chunks."
"We were caught by surprise," said the mechanic. "We'll put it back together and hope for the best, but an engine replacement might be imminent."
Any thoughts? I feel like a schmuck.
Thanks in advance.
