Yuck. Save the shavings, in one of those little sterile urine sample bottles. Keep some of the oil too, if it is still around.
Keep them, because if you have them analyzed, it can tell you what has become chunks - bearings and such are not the same composition as other components. If you can find the source, it will help with the diagnosis, and maybe you can go straight to the new engine instead of wasting more money.
You and the mechanics may never be able to find the exact cause. You might sleep better with the new engine, and the 'told-you-so's' may not echo so much either.
Good luck with the snake bite venom. Hope it dulls the pain.
