Defective drain plug washer.... Posted by MI-Roger [Email] ![]() ![]() |
I changed the oil in my car yesterday, backed out of the drive on the way to work this morning, and saw a palm sized oil spot on my concrete driveway!
So, at 5:45am I set-up my ramps and crawl under the car to see what is leaking. Drain plug is tight, filter is tight. Hmmm.....
Oil spots randomly under the car after parking it at varous work sites today, so out come the ramps again this afternoon for an inspection with day light.
I found my new copper drain plug washer was slightly damaged during manufacture, bent on the edge, so it cannot seal tight. Now my options are: 1) spend $24 for 4 new quarts of oil and recycle the stuff in the crankcase with only 300 miles on it; or 2) buy a new oil drain pan (the cheapest I can find) and pour the 300 mile oil back in the engine after replacing the slightly damaged washer.
Just a heads-up to inspect your new copper washers before installing them. A slight burr or damaged edge will prevent them from sealing properly.
