Failure doing Exhaust Back-pressure testing Posted by MI-Roger [Email] ![]() ![]() |
I had hoped to post some pressure readings today indicating exhauxt back-pressure on my 2000 lpt with 200,800 miles; but failure of the test device has thwarted this plan.
I installed a loaner pressure gage rig marketed for this exact purpose, using the first O2 sensor bung as per instructions. My plan was to leisurely drive 2 miles to an industrial park to get the engine up to temperature; do some full throttle runs during one lap of the park (which is empty on Sunday); then immediately drop onto the expressway where the entrance ramp is a steep uphill grade.
Halfway thru the industrial park the tubing on the gage rig melted thru! The highest reading I saw prior to that point was 6-8 psi but the boost may not have been full on (2000's do not have the dashboard boost gage).
So carefully limped home with the CEL showing; lifted the hood to allow faster cooling; reinstalled the O2 sensor after 45 minutes or so; and then cleared the CEL (open circuit with fron O2 - what I expected)
So, based on the 6-8 psi I read prior to tubing failure, and gut feel that I wasn't at fuul boost, maybe I do need a performance downpipe to replace my catalytic converter which may indeed be plugging with age.
No clear answers.
