In 2003, a modified engine control program was written to extend the life of the ignition cassette, along with the latest (and current) ignition cassette design. While the older hardware was recalled and replaced with the current design, the software upgrade was was left to the customer to pay for. Very few did. We've seen from GM's own failure data (part of the documentation in the NHTSA recall investigation) that the software alone (changed for the 2003 Arc V-6, which had the older hardware design) cuts the chance of failure over a 10 year period about in half.

In 2004, a new design SID was installed. Also, a new design PCV system was installed. PCV has been a festering problem on the 9-5 (and 2000-2002 9-3s) ever since the EPA ruled that the elegantly designed system they intended to use was in violation of OBD II regualtions. (It used a computer controlled valve to regulate PCV. OBD II requires all electronically controlled emissions equipment to be monitored and failures be reported using a standard set of codes. There is no code for PCV valves.)
