Your engine is an air pump. You need to move a specific amount of air to mix with a specific amount of fuel to get a certain amount of power. If the air is less dense (like when it gets hot outside), you need more throttle opening to move the same amount of air to get the same amount of power, and it gets the same amount of fuel mixed with it, so therefore no difference in mileage due to air density.
When it's really hot, you can't use as much ignition advance or turbo boost at low RPM (to avoid preignition) so you need more throttle off the line, the aircond compressor is working more, the alternator is working harder, all hurting mileage.
Around here though, gas mileage goes away more in the winter. Engines (especially turbos) run very efficiently in the -30 cold dense air, but long warm up times, tires spinning on ice & slush, and fighting your way through deep snow all mean good mpg is only a memory.
