Heat doesn't always turn on - problem?

I just had the valve replaced that allows coolant into the heater core (it was leaking). Since then, I have noticed that sometimes turning the climate control all the way up doesn't result in hot air.
Of course, it also needs to be said that it has been in the 80s here since I got the car back from the shop - not exactly ideal conditions for figuring out if a heating system is functioning normaly. However, I have attempted to get hot air from the car at different exterior temperatures and both when the car is just starting and after it has run a while. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to when it will produce hot air and when it won't. The only other thing I did in troubleshooting this was recalibrate the climate control system as the manual instructed. Initially, that got the heat coming out, but since then it has not always worked.
Do I have a problem here, or by turing the heat up in the middle of July am I simply asking for weird results from a climate control system?
