They do it for imaging purposes. If you're an audiophile, you want an image and a soundstage in front of you. If the rear speakers are too loud and obtrusive, it wrecks that. It's difficult to achieve in a car for obvious reasons but putting the rear speakers in the doors helps alot.
Unfortunately, most people don't care or know what imaging and soundstaging is and would rather lots of bold rich sound. For that purpose, putting speakers in the rear deck is better.
Putting the speakers in the rear deck vs the rear doors makes the sound in the rear too loud for passengers when it appears to sound normal to the people in front. We actually have this problem in the 9-3. It gets annoying with time. Passengers back there always complain when I think the sound is at a "normal" level.
Oh well... to each his own.
