Just a heads-up. I had noticed some paint bubbling on the rear wheel arch, right where it meets the rocker panel. When I pulled the plastic rocker cover and the wheel well liner I was confronted with an ugly, fist-sized hole in the worst possible place - where there are about four specific bends in a six-inch area.
I spent many unpleasant hours yesterday fixing this. I ripped the metal out, cleaned everything, welded in new metal, skimmed and sanded, and painted it. I would much rather have ignored it and spent my day by the pool, but rust doesn't get better on its own.
The problem appears to be that the plastic pieces covering the area allow moisture and debris in, but don't let it out. I found a glob of sandy mud in there when I opened it up.
Even if you don't have visible signs of rust, it might be worth dropping the plastic pieces to see what's doing under there.
Granted, I'm in the Northeast and the car is now eight years old and has 133k miles on it. But I'll bet I'm not the only one who has this problem.
