I have a 2004 Arc Wagon with 75K miles. I did the 30K Service as it was free but beyond that, I have done no other services as required by Saab.

I do change the oil with full synthetic (Mobil One) every 5-7K and I do change the air filter, i did the brakes myself.

I just brought my car into the shop because the coolant expansion valve was leaking (like most others seem to happen) and inquired about their major service. The Major serivce is $767.00!!!! I said no way....

I cant for the life of me understand why.....

they do air filter , cabin filter, fuel filter, plugs, and serpentine belt and flush the coolant.

the cabin filter is by far the most labor intensive part of that. i said skip it and i will do the plugs and fuel filter myself. i could care less about the cabin filter. i smoke anyways so a clogged one wont reduce my breathing capacity and more than i do on my own....

Am I missing some magic things they do to the car?

My other Saabs I felt driver angst IF I DID NOT do all services by the book , but when my Saabs reached high mileage I still had work that needed to be done for various other reasons.

Up front with the 2004, I decided to skip all major and minor services and treat the car like a domestic beater. I beat the living heck out of my wagon and decided to abuse it and just change the oil and air and see what problems arise.

i'm paying 220 to have them change the serpentine belt and tensioner as I asked them to do it ( ihave not had any issues) and the coolant leak is nothing more than a flaw in the design. So I think I'm ahead of the game but who the heck really knows..

Again, over 700 bucks is crazy..

I'm in Massachusetts an dchecked with three dealers and ALL were over 700 bucks.
