In my experience maintenance has no bearing at tradein time. I have traded in several cars and sold several privately. The private buyer(me included)wants to know that you serviced the car. The dealer couldn't care less if the oil has ever been changed. Most tradeins get wholesaled out.
For some strange reason people think cars sitting on the used car lot of a new car dealer are better cared for. I would venture to say they are the worst cared for cars. A higher end dealer will buy 1-4 year old cars at the auction that are off lease. Most people I know that lease cars don't do anything to them - even if its "no-cost" maintenance.
A buddy of mine was telling me how he was going to have to buy new tires next month when the 36month lease was up on his Lexus GS400 yet he's never changed the oil. He also lamented the charge he was going to have to pay for going 15k over his mileage allowance. I said why don't you just buy out the lease. He said, "Are you nuts the oil has never been changed."
