Heater Bypass Valve - Does it ever really blow?

Hi there,
'01 2.3L Sedan - Heater Bypass valve is obviously leaking and leaking worse on hotter days.
Does it ever completely fail?
The reason I ask is, I have to take a long trip this weekend (5 hrs each way) with wife and two daughters. It started to fail after taking an 8 hr each way trip last weekend.
The question is, do we ride in the comfort of a fine European Touring Sedan, or cram everyone in the 2000 Prius base model with no cruise control?
I would be just fine pulling over to add coolant every 90 minutes if that's all it takes. Have already ordered replacement, but we leave tomorrow.
Thanks in advance for thoughts.
