Paint and front bumper?

I had a minor rear end in my 2003 Aero back in march. There was no
metal bent but my body shop painted the rear bumper and the front (as I was push into the car in front of me and there was a minor scrape on it).
Even after a few weeks I notice paint chips in the front bumper. I really
regret having it painted now. 5 months later there are hundereds of chips in the front bumper. They appear as white chips all over the steel
grey paint. I cannot keep up with touch up paint.
My body shop and insurance claim I'll need a brand new bumper as the
a repaint of the existing one would make the paint too thick. They
could not say it would be anymore resilient/durable to chipping though.
Has anyone had their front bumper repainted and hold up well to chips? It
seems it will never be as durable as the factory paint. I so regret having it painted...it seems body shop paint has no durability to even the slightest road debris. My shop (surprise) did not seem to recommend Xpel/stoneguard ....said I would have to wait some months after painting it and those guards only last 2 years... Any experience or comments would be great.
