Hi guys. I'm hoping somebody can give me some advice.
I have a 1999 9-5 2.3L 4cyl with 120k miles. Something is wrong with the car, and I'm having trouble getting it sorted out.
My car will start ok and run fine until I accelerate past idle. This will cause the CEL to light up (and occasionally blink) and the engine feels like it has very little power. This is accompanied by a low vibration that lasts a second or two, every few seconds.
I took the car to AutoZone and got the codes read. They are:
P0303 - Cylinder 3 Misfire detected
P1303 - Cylinder number 3 random misfire detected
What I've done so far:
I replaced all four spark plugs, noting that the plug for cylinder 3 looked no more or less worn than the other three plugs. I was surprised at how easy this was--the hardest part was finding a ratchet extension long enough to reach the plugs.
I also looked around a bit and found a glaring rip in a vacuum hose and fixed it. There could well be another one somewhere, since I had a hard time telling exactly which hoses were vacuum hoses. Where should they all be coming from? A few of the ones I think are vacuum hoses appear to disappear under the engine towards the firewall and I can't check the ends of those.
I put everything back together. Car started and sounded great. Let it warm up, went for a drive...2 minutes in got the CEL again, same symptoms.
WHAT SHOULD I CHECK NEXT? I'd really appreciate some help.
I'm new to the whole car repair thing, but I'm delightfully short on cash and hoping to fix this myself. I'm reasonably handy and can do anything that doesn't require a very exotic tool.
