Need stereo advice: not enough midrange!

I bought my third 9-5 recently (2001 SE with HK stereo), and immediately dropped in my Boston Acoustic Z6 speakers (dash and doors), since the HK speakers are not very good. My Boston speakers are high-end ($1,000), and while the sound is MUCH improved over stock, there is still an amazing lack of midrange - just like with the HK speakers. Now I have great highs and OK bass, but I can barely hear any midrange voices.
Is this a function of a poorly-tuned HK amp/crossover? If so, would adding an aftermarket amp remedy the problem? Can an aftermarket amp even work with the stock HK head unit? Any suggestions on a brand/model?
Or, is a better option to go with an Infiniti Basslink? Would the Basslink be able to fill in the missing midrange voices?
I am not a techie when it comes to stereo installations, but I do have a sensitive ear, so I appreaciate any advice from someone who has experience in this area. Thanks!!
