Steering Column Shaft...How much trouble am I In?

On my 99 9-5, where the steering column meets the rack there's a universal joint and a pinch bolt. I was chasing the threads for the pinch bolt as the old one had been threaded by whomever put it in. While doing this, the short splined piece (with the universal joint) slid off the splines on the steering column. While it seems like it would just slide back on, it doesn't want to go. The WIS warns several times to never seperate the steering shaft. So, am I into a steering column replacement or is there a way to get this back on so it slides like it should? I have used lube on it. Thanks for any input....a little worried!
