2000 - 2001 Aero vs. 1999 - 2000 Volvo S70

Hello all - I am in the market for a new vehicle after my beloved 9000 was totaled. I liked the 9000...but at the same time didn't like the creaks and rattles, etc. of an 9 year old car.
I've driven Volvo 850s in the past and really enjoy them. Now, I am thinking about a 9-5 compared to a Volvo S70 (AWD and/or Turbo). Both fall right around my sweet spot price wise.
Not knowing much about 9-5s, what should I look for? 1999 model seems to be odd-ball as it was the first year? I am looking at 2000+ because I would really like an Aero or something similarly powerful.
Are 9-5 auto transmissions a weak spot? While I never had any problems, I have always read that 9000 auto transmisisons were the weak spot and rebuilds were mega $$$. Did they remedy any of this in the 9-5?
Common failures? SID and Coolant valve? Oh and sludging I guess I'll need to keep an eye out for.
Also, what about tunability? I'd really like to replace the ECU at some point down the road for more HP/Torque.
Thanks for any info you can provide. I'll keep searching the archives too!
