If I were in the market again I would definitely look for a 2002 or newer Aero, principally for two reasons; the wonderful front seats and the 5-speed automatic (previous years were 4-speeds). The auto transmission is an Aisan unit (as seen in Toyotas among others) and is a strong point, not a weak one. You can't beat the combination of acceleration and highway fuel economy. Also beginning in 2002 was a new aluminum front sub-frame and revised suspension tuning. As was pointed out in other posts, the suspension may be the biggest difference with the Aero and the Volvo. I've never driven the Volvo, but the Aero suspension is firm and well controlled (but not to the level of firmness that might be found with a 9000 Aero or a Viggen). Problems? Well, the SID is very annoying (I'll be on my third one soon), but everything else has been pretty much OK through 60K, although many complain about uneven tire wear due to camber of the rear suspension.
