The guy you have doing the work seems to be over his head on this. It sounds like he's thrown parts at the problem in hopes of solving it. Plugs and a fuel filter are cheap, a DI and MAF are not. IMHO, you should get your money back on the DI. A good shop would have put a test DI on the car and let you use that for a day or two, not just put in a new one.
He may be right that a software update is needed. There are updates for the newer DI cassettes, and that may be some of the problem. If he can't do the updates you'll have to find someone who can, like a dealer, or an indy who can.
Another thing to check is the possibility of water getting into your gas tank. (I had this happen on a VW and it drove me nuts 'til I figured it out.) Run some dry gas or a bottle of Techron with a full tank of premium gas. However, water in the gas would cause hard starts and runnability problems, but wouldn't necessarily cause a P0101 code.
Is there any chance your cat is plugged? That could cause a host of problems and the sulfuric smell.
Keep us posted! and good luck!
