The best way to avoid bent rims is to use a high tire....215/55/16. If you were to run this size for the summer (with summer rubber) you would enjoy these pros and cons......
1. Better gas mileage...the increase could be 3-4 MPG. I know; I've experienced it.
2. Smoothier ride
3. Less prone to hydroplane.....smaller footprint
4. Appearance....very hard to discern 215 versus 225
5. Handling....going from 225 or 235 down to 215 you would give up a little performance on dry pavement. But you might gain as much on wet pavement....the skinnier 215 is less prone to hydroplane.
Generally, don't try to use your snows all year around. The rubber compound on winter tires warms up and performs well at a much lower environmental temperature. In the summer this warming up is too much...and the snows don't perform as well as a summer compound AND the tire's wear characteristics are poor.
Hope that these thoughts help.
