My apologies Andrew. In trying to help you I lost sight of the question. Hopefully, the following is of some value.
1. Use of 235/45/17: This may be problematic for 2 reasons. First, the 2000-2005 Aero's came with 7" wheels AND 225 tires; only the 2006-2008 come with 7.5" wheels and 235 tires. Second, Saab has not provided any data regarding changes they made (if any) to accomodate the wider 235 tire.
2. Use of 215/50/17: It will fit on the wheel. Appearance difference versus the stock 225 width will be difficult to discern. There are 2 cautionary notes to consider. First, is the load rating of the 215/50/17 equal or better than the stock 225/45/17? Second, is clearance adequate? The Aero has lower suspension; this should raise the question as to how much higher 215/50/17 is versus the 225/45/17.
As a footnote....The circumference and height of a 215/55/16 and the 225/45/17 are the same.
