I had one in my '00 (recently replaced with an '07). It was much easier to change the oil and I don't think it leaves any significant amount.
As for being banged open - it's much less likely than you think, it requires two actions to open - lift and twist at the same time. And it is quite strong so it could not be forced open just being pushed by impact.
