The belt is not really the problem. Posted by SWEDECAR [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: another V6 timing belt discussion..., rsfeller, Wed, 21 Nov 2007 20:18:43 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The timing belt itself used in Saab's could easily go for 100-105K miles as in many other brands but the three pulleys seems to have a tough time lasting more than 60K.
It is therefore very bad to reuse the old pulleys as what Saab have been doing through the years when doing the free belt replacement at 60K.
The old pulleys and belt might be able to struggle along for several more miles after 60K (I think Catera and Saturn is 70 or 100K) since they are worn together and the tension on the pulleys have let go a little.
And here you are, throwing a brand new belt on there and cranking up the tensioner pulley to full tension again, thinking it will suddenly be young and full of life, not!
So if you know for sure that the three pulleys were replaced at 55K together with the belt, you can go to 115-120K.
If they were not replaced, you should replace it yesterday.
Volvo have from 1999 extended the timing belt to 105K and 10 years but we now see that the belt will be full of dry cracks after about 5-6 years and as little as 50K miles.
So yes, time also is a factor not miles only.
