Potential bad news from a free inspection... (long)... Posted by MI-Roger [Email] ![]() ![]() |
I received a letter last week from one of the Detroit are Dealers offering a Free Winter Safety & Service Inspection for Saabs. All repairs scheduled as a result of this inspection would receive a 10% discount on parts and labor. With 213,350 miles on my 2000lpt it didn't take me long to decide a free inspection to look for things not obvious to me was a good idea!
My results are in: engine oil leak, probably from the head gasket, $1,300 cost to repair; and if the leak is from the front engine cover the repair cost jumps to $2,300. A $2,300 engine repair on a car with a market value of potentially only $4,000. Not good news.
I asked the girl at the Service Counter if the Mechanic mentioned the serverity of the leak. He had told her "I would be surprised if the owner hasn't already noticed it". But I haven't noticed any leak! No oil spots on my driveway where I have been parking my car. No oil spots in the parking stall at work that I always use.
I replaced the head bolts D-I-Y nearly 3 years ago, so they should be good. I had the oil pressure sensor changed early this summer because I was told during my fuel pump replacement it was beginning to leak oil. I replaced my valve cover gasket this summer D-I-Y because it was weeping oil. And I seem to remember spilling oil around the fill tube when doing my last oil change 4 to 5 weeks ago. Ample sources for oil residue on the outside of the engine not related to a bad head gasket or front cover seal.
I am hoping the mechanics saw oil residue on a high mileage vehicle's engine, added 2 + 2, and arrived at 5 as an answer. But I will definitely be looking for oil spots!
The only other items mentioned were: coolant system flush; and injector cleaning. The engine still has the original water pump (no mention of pump leaks), the brake rotors were last replaced 133,000 miles ago (said pads were good, no mention of rotors), and the trannsmission is due for a drain & re-fill (no mention of tranny fluid).
