Modern engines completely shut off the fuel during coasting situations. Typically they do this until either engine or vehichle speed drops below a preset value. So for the period of time you are coasting with the engine engaged, you are getting infinite gas mileage as you are using ZERO gas. With a drive by wire throttle like is found in SAABs, it would even be possible to minimize the losses from a closed throttle plate. I don't know if SAAB does that with the throttle, but they definitely do something with fuel cutoffs. Reset your SID sometime while coasting in gear on a long downhill grade. You can see some rather unbelieveable MPG numbers. If you put the transmission in nuetral, you defeat the fuel cutoff as the engine speed preset turns the fuel back on.
