The HOT turbos are just bigger than LPT turbos, to make a long story short. Therefore they can pump more air into the engine. While it takes a bit longer to spool up (turbo lag), you get a lot more boost once it does. The Saab Trionic engine management system does a pretty good job of minimizing the lag though. Saab makes so many changes throughout the model years, but I know at one point the LPT's used Garrett GT-17 turbos while the Aero HOT's used Mitsubishi TD-04's. While yes, more boost puts more strain on the engine, the Saab 4-cylinder can take it with no problem. The Mitsubishi TD-04 has proven to be a much more reliable turbo than the Garrett GT-17. Lots of people, including myself, have had to replace the turbo on our cars, but most Aero owners do not run into this problem. The LPT's smaller turbo takes less time to spool so there's almost always boost, even in very low RPM's. You can't really feel the turbo "kick in" as some describe it on the HOT's.
