I have an LPT and it feels just like a bigger motor (V6), which it effectively is due to the boost. The low end torque and fuel efficiency are amazing. The particular turbo on this motor is a weak point, but that has nothing to do with the LPT concept which is very viable, especially for economy and reliablility. More manufacturers will be bringing developing LPT engines now due to the tightening requirements for fuel economy in heavier vehicles, where the torque of the LPT lends itself.
The HOT motor is awesome, since it effectively continues the boost much further up the powerband where real horsepower can be made, but yes, it will definitely stress the engine more. Engine bearing loads and stress increase at the square of rpm, plus you have very high combustion pressures. As mentioned, the engines are designed to take it, but I wouldn't expect quite the same longevity as an LPT if that powerband is used frequently and fully, ie. long hard pulls in higher gears.
