I'd like to add my 2 cents in on the battery helping a hard starting issue. I bought a 2002 9-5 ARC V-6 this past summer. Come fall the thing was having a tough time starting first thing in the morning. If it was left for a day or two it was almost impossible to start. Searching here on this forum, I read about the seasonal and octane and even name brand issues gas was having on Saabs starting. I toyed with this and tried all kinds of brands of gas but the problem continued. I hoped it would go away as the gas stations finished transitioning to winter blend gas but it never improved. I noticed that when the car started right up, it was always when the starter spun up quick and powerful and when it wouldn't start the starter seemed to labor and be weak. Now I’m not talking weak by normal means. Every car I've ever owned would start fine with similar cranking power on a cold day. One cold Monday morning after the car sat all weekend and I was running late for work, I tried and tried to start my engine but to no avail. After several longer than normal tries the battery went dead. I hooked up my super duper battery charger and 10 minutes later the car fired right up. Now this confirmed to me that all the gas hype was just that – hype. I replace the 5+ year old OEM battery and guess what, even with cheaper mid range gas the engine fires up in a couple seconds. With almost 40 years of working on my Saab’s, I'm amazed that my whole starting issue on this one turned out to be just the weak battery.
