2000-2002 were the best 9-3 years. the 99 9-3 has some differences engine wise. 2002 was the last year of the hatchback style, and seem to hold value better than the 2003 non-hatches for some reason. The Viggens were highly desireable and a blast to drive. I have and 02 9-3 and the Viggen and love them both. I respectfully disagree about the 9-5 being the most reliable. on the contrary, having owned every model of Saab since the classic 900, my mechanic and I would say the early 9-5s at least are the worst cars for very expensive and unpredictable problems. Both the 9-3 and 9-5 suffer from the sludging problems if the pcv wasn't replaced, and both models had the same ignition cassette and tensioner problems. On the 9-5 you also have TCS woes (don't get me started) the exploding V6 timing belts, more frequent and expensive turbo failures, and the joys of an alarm that goes off at night at random.
