I've got the same car... Posted by B Millar [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: New reason for sludge I haven't heard before, paulssaab ![]() |
You're in for a treat. I've got a 2001 SE V6 sedan too and I love it. I bought it as my first car a little over a year ago from a friend of the family with 159k miles on it. I've had to spend a lot of money on it - first was the CPS, which left me on the side of the road twice, then the turbo which began to blow enough smoke after acceleration that I couldn't see anything behind me, and just a couple weeks ago the timing belt, pullies, and transmission mount. The character of the car totally makes up for it though.
For the timing belt I brought it on at 56k miles since the last service. I asked to see the stuff that they took off and the belt looked fine, but the tensioners were beginning to show some wear. Probably could have gotten another 4k miles out of them but I like the piece of mind.
I'd say my favorite thing about the car is the torque the little turbo gives you at low engine speeds, especially on hills. Going along a flat road doing around 50, at maybe 1500rpm, you start up a steep hill and you push the gas a little. The rpm's don't move at all but the boost gauge flings up and the engine sound gets real deep and growly. Maintaining 50mph and 1500 rpm you actually begin to accelerate up the hill in 4th gear. My mom's normally-aspirated car can't decide between 2nd or 3rd and revs like hell to go up the same hill.
While I'm thinking of it, if you've got high miles on the car check the transmission fluid. Mine was GROSS when I got it- probably original.
I should stop babbling now. Good luck!
