Tire choice and fuel economy

I recently traded an '04 Arc SW for an '07 Aero Sedan. Both cars were fitted with Pirelli P6 tires; the Arc wagan in P225/55/16 and the Aero in P235/45/17. In both cases I've noticed that my fuel economy improved when I switched over to P225/55/16 Conti WinterContact tires. I'm guessing the improvement is at least 2 mpg (about 8%) in both cold and warmer temps.
I was rather surprised by this; I've come to expect my fuel economy to decrease in the Winter months due to the cold, and Winter formulated gas; that's been the case in the past, with other cars.
I also calculated the difference in circumference between the two tire sizes. It was 1.6%. Not enough to account for the difference with the Aero. So I think maybe P6s have significantly higher rolling resistance than other tires -certainly more than my Conti Winter tires.
It would be great to get a list started of tires that others have noticed higher or lower fuel economy.
