You will need some items before you begin..... Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Mon, 4 Feb 2008 06:12:32 In Reply to: help with valve cover, jpb in me, Mon, 4 Feb 2008 05:34:09 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The "black center cover" is your IDM (Ignition Discharge Module) also commonly called by its former name of DIC (Discharge Ignition Cassette). This needs to be removed first. Four torx head screws and one electrical connector at the end. Store this component in the upright position (just as installed on engine) after you remove it.
You will need a valve cover gasket set which consists of two gaskets to seal the inner and outer perimeter of the valve cover. Buy the official Saab part. I bought the cheapest aftermarket gasket set I could find and discovered that it hardened prematurely, resulting in weeping of oil, and I then had to replace the gasket a second time.
You will need a tube of gasket sealant/adhesive to hold the new gaskets in their grooves when you flip the valve cover over to re-install it on the engine. Use this as sparingly as possible! Another advantage of the Saab gaskets is that they are slightly thicker and fit more securely in the grooves.
Also have a rubber mallet handy to smack the valve cover after removing all the screws. It usually sticks to the head.
Print out the proper valve cover screw tightening sequence (I think genuinesaab has it on their technical page) to assit with replacement.
Have fun!
