Anders, very much appreciate your input. It's difficult deciding how best to proceed based upon conflicting information not only from on here but also from local repair shops.
One shop says that they replace timing chains fairly often - but not balance chains. Posters on here say that if you hear one chain the other will also be worn, so just remove the chain.
As my oil pan was very clean and the pickup screen had maybe 15% of it's area with black grounds I think I'm going to clean everything up and put the pan back and leave the balance chain - it looks like it would be somewhat difficult to remove, and I saw zero metallic shards.
Then I will order a timing chain and roll it in the engine - the WIS instructions were really poor on how to do this.
I think the balance chain is ok but even if it isn't I can drop the pan and figure out how to remove it later.
I'm still perplexed as to how the timing chain stretched, but maybe my oil pump is weak , but oil light goes out as soon as car is started and never has flickered. Engine is still extremely smooth and was very quiet until I noticed small chain rattle. Compression in all cylinders was between 172 and 175 lbs.
What do you think about leaving the balance chain for now ?
thanks
