well that explains what happened to my 1986 9000T , I think it was around 125K miles that the chain suddenly began to make a huge clatter. Someone said the tensioners were defective so I replaced chain, cam sprockets and tensioner. Fairly easy job as with that car I was able to get the timing cover off with the engine in the car. That chain lasted quietly until the car was killed in an accident at 225k miles . Lots of stuff in that car was still orginal - starter, alternator, pwr steering, fuel pump, even the suspension. It did go through several intermediate mufflers and all of it's engine mounts though.
The only thing I can think of with the chain on my 1999 9-5 is that I bought it as a lease return with I think 14k miles, likely the oil was never changed so maybe much of the chain wear was early on. We'll see what happens when I replace the timing chain.
I've heard the sludge issue was fixed in 2004 so I won't have to worry about the wife's ARC, but it's been to the shop for warranty a few times too many.
Then there is the Hyundai Elantra I just bought my daughter - that car is pretty nicely engineered and oh so easy to access anything in the engine compartment. Hydunai will release a 375HP machine this summer, so my timing chain needs to last at least till then, the 170HP of the 1999 9-5 is feeling a little too lethargic these days. I rented an Azera a while back, it drove nice but it had pretty lame seats.
I'm beginning to lose my my patience with Saab.
