How ironic, I just picked up my 2000 9-5 with 140,000 mi from my indie today.
Last year, was told I need a head gasket replacement (another sign it's genuine Saab). I lived with it until I couldn't take the oil leaks anymore. Anyways, I told them to replace anything that might need replacing since they will have the motor pulled out for the head gasket. They replace: head gasket, valve cover gasket, oil sending unit (leaking bad), turbo gasket, timing chain, thermostat, coolant, oil & filter, engine seals, bolts/stud replace. Parts were $410 and labor $700, so with all tax/fees, total was $1,185.
A few weeks ago the blower motor was replaced for around $350 roughly. A coupleof months prior to that I had the serp belt, pulleys, tranmission sensor, and SID replaced, I think bill was around $350 again.
These repairs have been off/on since I've bought the car in 2003 with 45,000 on it. Things will run fine, then BAM!, a bunch of things happen at once. I absolutely love driving it, but the cost is getting to me.
The 9-5 is a very reliable European car, but IMO, be realistic and plan on a budget of $2,000 a year to keep it running in top shape, maybe less if you can do a some of the stuff yourself. Good luck!
