This is a common problem on some older cars with lots of miles. It is possible the contactor in the starter solenoid has become pitted and corroded. When the starter gets hot the resistance goes up not allowing a good power flow to the starter motor. It will pretty much stay this way until the solenoid cools. To test the theory when it does not start, try looking at the voltage on the exposed braided copper lead going to the starter motor while some one tries to start the car. Voltage may be very low or even non-existant. This condition does not seem to be present with the MHI starter in 2002 and up. If you are having this problem, it will in the not to distant future fail to start under any condition. Sort of a "graceful degradation" before total failure.
